Hurricane Frances Advisory #26

09/06/2004 5:40:19 PM

FOR IMMEDIATE ATTENTION
DATE: September 6, 2004
TIME: 5:45 p.m.
HURRICANE HOTLINE: 954-831-4000

The Broward County Emergency Operations Center announces the following updates for Hurricane Frances:

• Broward County is one of 13 Florida counties that have been designated eligible for disaster aid by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The federal disaster aid will help homeowners, renters and businesses meet their recovery needs in the aftermath of Hurricane Frances.

Assistance includes grants to help pay for temporary housing, home repairs and other serious disaster-related expenses not met by insurance or other aid programs. Low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration will also be available to cover residential and business losses not fully compensated by insurance.

Residents and business owners should contact FEMA directly to begin the disaster application process at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY) for the hearing or speech-impaired. The toll-free number is available 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

• Broward County public schools will remain closed Tuesday, September 7 as restoration efforts from Hurricane Frances continue. Students, teachers and other school-based instructional staff should not report to schools. District offices and facilities will reopen tomorrow. All full-time district employees, including administrative and supervisory, clerical, maintenance and facility service employees should report to their normal work locations. All food service employees should also report to their respective work locations. Principals and assistant principals should report to their respective schools.

Students, parents and district employees should monitor the School District’s web site at www.browardschools.com or call the School District hotline at 754-321-0321 for updates. The local news media will also provide updates on the status of schools.

• The School Board of Broward County Board meeting scheduled for Tuesday, September 7 has been canceled.

• Because many lift stations are still without power, residents are urged to conserve water. Lift stations are used to pump wastewater to treatment plant. When lift stations are without power for more than 24 hours, the drainage system can backup and spills can result. Drainage overflows can contaminate standing water and cause serious health concerns. Crews are working to restore power as quickly as possible.

• Due to power outages, the following 11 Broward County library branches will be closed tomorrow (Tuesday, September 7): Northwest Regional Library, Coral Springs; Tamarac Popular Branch; Tyrone Bryant, Fort Lauderdale; Fort Lauderdale Branch; Galt Ocean Mile Branch, Fort Lauderdale; Lauderhill Mall; Collier City, Pompano Beach; South Regional Library, Pembroke Pines; Hollywood Branch Library; Hollywood Beach Branch Library; and the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center, Fort Lauderdale.

• The City of Coral Springs closed its waste transfer station at 5 p.m. today. Residents may take their refuse to Data Recycling, at the intersection of Powerline and Copans roads. The facility will be open until 6 p.m. today.

• An estimated 244,700 homes are still without power. FPL crews are working to restore power to affected homes as quickly as possible. FPL has already restored power to almost 350,000 homes. Power to approximately 590,600 homes in Broward County was affected by Hurricane Frances.

• The boil water order for the City of Hallandale Beach remains in effect until further notice. In addition, East Hallandale Beach Boulevard from Federal Highway (US1) to A1A is closed to vehicular traffic until 6 a.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, September 7) to allow for repairs to a large water main break.

• Many intersections throughout Broward County are still without power. Drivers are advised to use extreme caution while traveling through these intersections and to treat all inoperable intersections as four-way stop signs.

• There is no boil water order for Deerfield Beach. Water is safe for consumption and water pressure is at 100 percent.

• The Broward County Hurricane Hotline will close tonight at 7 p.m. It will reopen at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. The Broward County Emergency Operations Center will also close emergency operations for Hurricane Frances at 7 p.m. tonight. Cities officials may contact their on-duty officer at the warning point in case of emergency.
