HURRICANE FRANCES

On its current track, Frances has slowed to the point that it will now make landfall near Port St. Lucie at around 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning. Tropical storm force winds 45-59 mph will begin to impact Charlotte County by 8:00 p.m. Saturday and are forecast to continue through 7:00 p.m. Sunday.

Storm surge flooding of 5 feet above normal levels is expected for Lake Okeechobee. Along the southwest Florida coast, storm surge flooding of 1to 3 feet above normal tide levels is expected south of the path of Frances.

Charlotte County opened six points of “refuge of last resort” at 6 a.m. Saturday. They are located in Punta Gorda at Sallie Jones Elementary and Friendship United Methodist Church…in Port Charlotte at Liberty Elementary and Murdock Middle…and in Englewood at L.A. Ainger Middle and Lemon Bay High School. In Sarasota County, Northport High School is open as a refuge. Those choosing to relocate to one of these sites are reminded they must bring their own supplies and amenities.

Shelters:

· The Cultural Center, located at 2280 Aaron Street, Port Charlotte, is now open and functioning as a Red Cross Shelter.

Animal Evacuation Issues:

Charlotte County Animal Control is encouraging residents who choose to evacuate to heed the following precautions in regards to their animals left behind:

· Make sure your animal is in a secure area.

· Do not keep your animal in a carrier/cage. Make sure the animal has free roam of the secure area.

· In the event you may be gone for an extended period of time, make sure your animal has enough food and water to last 10 days. It is recommended to fill the bathtub with water for your animal.

· Make sure your animal is wearing its license tag. A personal ID tag with contact information is strongly recommended.

· Talk to neighbors or friends who may be staying who may be able to periodically check on your animal.

Charlotte County Animal Control always recommends that you keep your animal with you if possible.

Contacting Transit (Dial-a-Ride & Sunshine Ride):

Operations available on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, September 4, 5, and 6, during daylight hours until wind reaches 40 mph. May be contacted at 941-575-4000.

Operation Blue Roof:

Operation Blue Roof is a FEMA-assigned mission of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, intended to provide temporary repairs to roofs in Charlotte, DeSoto and other counties. Corps contractors will install the temporary roof covering at no cost to homeowners. To get the help, homeowners must sign a "Right of Entry" form that allows Corps staff to assess roof damage, and for Corps contractors to do the work. Corps and volunteers will be in your neighborhood or you may visit an outreach center to sign a form. Installation will occur at the earliest possible date. For the latest information on locations, dates and hours to sign a Right of Entry form, call toll-free to 1-888-ROOF-BLU (1-888-766-3258). Locations are subject to change.

Special Needs Shelter for Hurricane Frances:
Date: Friday, September 03, 2004 Time: 12:25:58 PM

Residents who have special needs, or special health requirements, can go to Edison Community College, 26300 Airport Road, Punta Gorda to be assessed. Those meeting the criteria for special needs sheltering will be transported to the Harborside Event Center in Ft. Myers.
